I have integrated this mBot within my year 8 program. The clear instructions are easy to interpret and assemble. I had students taking turns in groups to assemble and deconstruct the mBot. This helped students to become familiar with the various parts. We spent some time in class recognising the different electronic components on the PCB, so students had a clear understanding of its functions e.g. switch, LED, Sensor.
Students created there own mazes out of A4 Paper boxes. They needed to have 3 points which the mBot needed to go to (I have attached an example). Student then used mBlock software to program the mBot to go through their maze and go to the certain points. Students found the colour coordinated 'Code Blocks' easy to format. They used many skills through this process such as problem solving, numeracy and team collaboration skills.
Overall, I value the mBot to be an excellent resource for schools. I had to experiment and trial with many different tasks before I tried it with my students. I believe the students enjoyed the mBot experience and engaged with this innovative piece of technology. Unfortunately I will be unable to purchase a class set as my budget does not permit. I will endeavour to pursue leadership to find the $$$ to embed this within my curriculum.Tony Zimbardi
