Has LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime & SPIKE™ Essential Been Discontinued?

Last week, LEGO® Education released an important update regarding the LEGO® Education SPIKE™ portfolio. In this announcement, LEGO® Education shared that after careful consideration, they have decided to retire the immensely popular LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Prime and SPIKE™ Essential sets, with sales concluding on June 30, 2026.

What Does This Mean for Current SPIKE™ Portfolio Users?

For educators, schools, and organisations that already own LEGO Education SPIKE Prime or SPIKE Essential sets, there is no immediate cause for concern. The SPIKE™ portfolio will continue to be a valuable and effective tool for classrooms, summer programs, and after-school activities for years to come.

Most importantly, the SPIKE™ App will continue to be supported until June 30, 2031, ensuring that existing hardware remains fully usable and supported well into the future.

Impact on FIRST® LEGO® League

The retirement of the SPIKE portfolio will eventually impact participation in FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL). During the 2027–2028 season, teams will still be able to compete using SPIKE products. However, beginning after that season, changes to the FIRST LEGO League experience mean that SPIKE solutions—along with other legacy LEGO Education platforms—will no longer be eligible for competition.

Instead, teams will be able to participate using LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI kits, starting with the 2026–2027 season.

What’s Next After SPIKE™?

With the SPIKE portfolio retiring, many educators are wondering what will replace it. At this time, LEGO Education has not announced a direct replacement for SPIKE Prime or SPIKE Essential.

However, earlier this year LEGO Education revealed plans to launch three new kits focused on computer science and artificial intelligence later this year. These new kits will use components similar to those found in the LEGO® Education Science kits, signaling a shift toward a broader focus on computer science and AI learning experiences.

While the SPIKE Potfolio may be nearing the end of its lifecycle, LEGO® Education’s continued investment in future-focused learning tools ensures that educators will have exciting new opportunities to inspire students in the years ahead.
